Meet the guides

I grew up fly fishing in Northern Nevada in a back pack whistling up fish for my father. I choose Montana State after my collegiate wrestling career because of the great fly fishing and have never looked back. After guiding for 10 years I started Montana Troutwranglers and am enjoying ever minute of it. My philosophy is on guiding is that anyone can have a banner day, but it takes a great guide to make a poor day into a great day. So I have assemble a guide staff that I would want to fish with if I was fishing in Montana. These guys are the most fishy, hard working, professional, and enjoyable guys to spend a day with I have found. We want to make you a better angler and share our secrets to help you catch the trout of your dreams. We don't just fish any one river we specialize in them all. Whether this is your first time or you have fished the world, you won't be disappointed by our knowledge of the areas rivers and the fishing. When I am not guiding I enjoy fishing with my new puppy "Guppy", he loves to float in the boat but hasn't figured out where the trout disappear to when released back into the river.
Cale VanVelkinburgh likes to fly fish. Sure, he likes to ski and
read and watch movies too, but no girlfriend has ever left him for those habits. Nope, just fly fishing carries the price tag and because of this tag Cale has made it a goal to blow off as many responsibilities as possible in order to fish as much as possible. His passion for angling and hate for chores began when he was seven on a small creek in his hometown of Frisco, CO. He fished there until he was old enough to drive, and therefore old enough to transport other anglers to rivers and "guide" them. From there Cale has shirked more responsibilities by guiding and fishing throughout Patagonia, Alaska, New Zealand, Belize, Brazil, Mexico and the Bahamas. In between lengthy fishing vacations he can be found guiding in Montana or making margaritas in his boat on the occasional day off. Oh, and he has a dog named Cerveza.
ded both white water and fly fishing trips in Southwest Montana since the summer of 1992. A native Floridian, he grew up on fly fishing for bass, redfish, snook and tarpon. Louis drew on these experiences to land his first guiding position for Casa Blanca, a fly fishing resort in the Yucatan. After selling the Yellowstone raft Company in 2006, Louis has more time to devote to his family. Louis's family includes his wife Sara ( a nurse and Bozeman native) and 3 year old Finely, who recently caught his first trout on the Madison.Jennifer Funk was born and raised in Roundup, MT. After a short stint in WY, she graduated from Montana State University with a degree in Psychology. She grew up g
oing to the family cabin every summer on the Boulder River, but always fished with worms she would dig up from 'out back'. About 5 years ago, her Dad asked if she wanted to learn how to fly fish, and she soon realized how challenging it was and how much more she liked it. She has mainly fished small rivers and streams, but fell in love with the Missouri last year and hopes to fish it many times this summer. She is excited to be working with Dane and Montana Troutwranglers so she can keep learning more and more about this incredible sport. For now, Dane is keeping her in the office, but she hopes once she starts landing big fish, she will convince him otherwise!

Rick Weisend has been guiding the rivers of Southwest montana for the last five years. Fish have always been Rick's passion since a young age in California. He took his passion for trout to the next level with a degree in Fisheries Biology from Humboldt State University. Rick is a proud 'fly tying nerd'. Some of his other passions include hunting upland game birds with his English Setter, Cotton, and Fishing the tropical saltwater flats in the winter.
Rick loves fishing with beginners and kids. He loves helping people catch their first fish on a fly rod. Rick has endless patience with people that are learning. His pet peave is people who think they have learned everything and don't listen to guide advice. Rick is always suprised when he sets a client up in a good spot and comes back to find them nipple deep in the middle of the hole.
Rick's favorite place in the world has to be the Middle Fork of the Tuolomnie River in California. This is where Rick learned to wrangle trout and was the beginning of his life long obsession. His modern day favorite spot is Stella Maris in the Bahamas.

Red Bull. Copenhagen. Bow River buggers. PBR. That about sums it up. Native Pennsylvanian, Greg moved to Montana to become a fishing guide in the mid 90's and now spends approximately 250 days a year guiding for trout. Summers in Montana, winters in Chile Bricker believes that he found the secret of life. After Greg's first visit to Montana, he knew he found home in Big Sky country. He now spends as much time as possible in his drift boat fishing the Yellowstone, Madison, Beaverhead and the Big Hole Rivers. Now he has to spend his summers telling Dane what flies to throw.
